The area was originally inhabited by the Negritos and later by migrants from nearby islands, known as "Dumalaget" meaning "to snatch."

Silliman University was established by American Presbyterian missionaries, becoming the first American university in Asia.
Dumaguete was officially chartered as a city under Republic Act No. 327, signed by President Manuel Roxas.
