Originally settled by the Bukidnon and Magahat tribes, with later migrations of Cebuano and Ilonggo settlers establishing agricultural communities along the riverbanks.
Kabankalan was officially established as a municipality on August 31, 1907, during the American colonial period, with Don Antonio Escuban as the first municipal president.
The city became a major sugar-producing area, earning the title "Sugar Bowl of Negros Occidental" and driving significant economic growth and infrastructure development.
Kabankalan was converted into a city under Republic Act No. 8297, signed by President Fidel V. Ramos on June 6, 1997, becoming the 5th city of Negros Occidental.
